Experiencing bleeding, swelling, and discomfort after the exposure of an impacted tooth is common, but proper care can promote healing and alleviate discomfort. Here are some instructions you need to follow:
Some bleeding or redness in saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. To control excessive bleeding, apply firm pressure with a gauze pad directly on the bleeding wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact our office for further guidance.
Swelling is typical after surgery. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel or a plastic bag filled with ice cubes to the cheek in the surgery area. Keep applying ice for the first 36 hours as much as possible.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Also, avoid consuming very hot liquids or foods. More importantly, stick to soft foods and liquids on the day of surgery, gradually transitioning to a normal diet unless otherwise advised.
Begin taking pain medication before the local anesthetic wears off. For moderate pain, take one to two tablets of Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol every three to four hours. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) can be taken instead of or in addition to Tylenol. Follow the prescribed medication for severe pain, if any.
Maintaining mouth cleanliness is crucial for optimal healing. Clean your mouth thoroughly after each meal starting the day after surgery. Brush your teeth gently and rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) six times a day until healing is complete.
By following these instructions carefully, you can ensure a smoother recovery process and promote optimal healing. If you have any concerns or are experiencing persistent symptoms, don't hesitate to contact our office for assistance.
